Poor Video playback Quality of MK808

Postby gautamg » Tue Mar 05, 2013 4:12 am

I got my MK808 from geekbuying.com a few days back. It came with the latest firmware of 10th January.2013
Apps and other things are working fine but The problem is in the Video playback. I have connected the HDMI output of the MK808 to sony Bravia Full HD 32".
The 720P and 1080 P files are quite jerky and loss of frames is frequent. I tried playing from USB and Sd Card both.
I have tried with all players including VLC, Mobo, internal Video player, HD video player,XBMC but the quality is really poor.
My WD HD player is playing those same videos perfectly. I have read on a few forums that overclocking the MK808 upto 1.4 GHz gives a better performance.
please suggest on how to achieve this ?
Thanks

MK808 can never be a replacement of fully featured media player such as wd tv live. However, it is not that bad with the recent kernels and firmwares.

Check my post to see 2 video playback tests of mk808

Install MX Player and ARMv7 codecs, it plays 1080p content just fine (at least on Finless rom). I don't know about other players you tried but XBMC for android doesn't support hardware acceleration yet so that's why XBMC is too slow.

Do you have to configure MX Player or ARM7 codec, or does it work automatically?

I also have experienced some problems in playback. When there are fast movements or some significant moving on the screen there are some micro stutters. I tried every player and of course MX player without and then with arm 7 codec (neon and non neun). Nothing helps! Is it normal? :?:

I am using Finless 2.0 rom but playing 1080p mkv still very stutters even play via mx player or bs player, can you tell me how to play 1080p smoothly? thanks

I have imito mx2 and have the same problem.
Check the movie Cowboys Vs Aliens... On the begining before titles on first scene have a large video panning and the judder/sutter/lag or i dont know what is but really sucks.
i test all video players with HW enable and all have the same problem.
The problem is on the hardware or on the firmware ( I test with stock firm and now with finless 1.7 and the problem persist).

If anyone resolve this problem please write the solution here!!

Sorry for my bad english
Cheers.

hi there,

I have mk808 finless 1.7c and same problem. I tried lewy20041, finless 2.0 but issue remains same. at fast moving scenes (frame skip or stutter or what ever you want to call it) it is easily noticeable and annoying.
I had mk802 and never experienced something like this. I purchased mk808 for upgrade but it is very disappointing.

I hope someone can figure it out.

thanks

Again and again. This issue has been posted & repeat several times and noone seems to be doing anything about it:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1390
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1606
viewtopic.php?f=76&t=1364

It's not just with movie playback, but with video output in general (ie. anything being rendered on the screen at a predefined speed will end up skipping / juddering). The issue exists in all firmwares of the MK808/Imito/etc and can be seen on any display/computer LCD/etc.

I have also posted several threads about it on freaktab.

It is _really_ annoying and honestly is what is holding me back from putting more time in setting up my device properly.

It is most probably a bug in the HDMI video output driver; I've looked a bit in the sources but couldn't find anything obvious. It would be nice if someone really knowledgeable could voice-in and provide help...

Hi mrblack1134.
You try Flash Imito mx1/mx2 with Mk802ii or mk802iii Firmware? The People says Mk802 dont have this problem.

I have Imito mx2 and the judder/frame skip on panning scenes is incredible. I dont find any solution for this and i buy from Dx.com from china Minix Neo X5, i think arrived next week, I hope Minix works fine.

So, as I can see a solution will be to take HDMI output from mk802 firmware...

I haven't tried the MK802 III firmware on my Imito yet. I will try to give it a shot tonight -- I will report back wether the issue is still there or not once I'm done.

If indeed it solves the problem, one solution would be to compare the video drive code and try to find differences...

Hi all,

Yesterday I tried 2dark4u 1080p kernel and realized that stutter is not gone but reduced. Also stutter is max at MX player and fewer at stock video player. And I think setting force gpu for 2d on helping a bit.

I will try different kernel rom combinations and post the progress.

Cheers

hyp3r,

Nevermind the video players; try it in an opengl game ie. the Angry Birds demo, before you hit "Play Game" there is a smooth scrolling bird flying in the screen. The stutter is EXTREMELY obvious there -- if it's gone, you'll see it right away.

The video players can give different results (different files, streaming speeds etc...). The bug is more fundamental -- it's in the video output.

I still haven't tried the MK802 firmwares. I will report when I do.

Mrblack i think i figure it out. Our devices are not genuine mk808. Although it has rk901 it is somehow different.
I tryed so hard to install omegamoon kernel or kizs kernel, i failed. And i saw some people like me on the forumd they could not succeeded. Omegamoon did some trick on hdmi drivers i badly wanted to make it run but it did not happen. It stucks on the boot screen. Only kernel that working is 2dark4u 1.4.
On my final tryout i installed cyanogenmod 10 and it was all same. The units we own got some problem with hdmi.
Sorry but this is the case :/

Ok fellas,

Here is where I am now:
1. My friend just bought from geekbuying.com and have that issue too (with stock firmware). So my fear of having fake mk808 now gone. I am sure that all of mk808 have this issue.
2. This frame skip is maximum at 720p kernel with 1080p resolution while watching 1080p movie.
3. Frame skip is minimum or not very noticeable 720p kernel with 720p resolution while watching 720p movie.
4. Frame skip at 1080p kernel with 1080p resolution while watching 1080p movie is very very less compared to item no.1 So if you like to watch 1080p movies you should switch to 1080p kernel
5. Developer settings; Force gpu for 2d drawing and Disable hw overlays have no effect on fixing this issue.

So these are my findings. Hope some crazy programmer hero can find and fix this issue so we can enjoy our beloved mk808.

Cheers

hyp3r,

I agree -- everybody with an RK3066 based HDMI TV stick seems to have that problem. The stuttering is somewhat subtle, not _really_ annoying but annoying enough that it can be noticed quite frequently. I mean, I can still watch documentaries / movies / TV shows on Netflix, but once in a while I will see a video hiccup.

It's funny -- I was watching reviews of the UG802, MK808 and other devices on youtube. The guy making the review was saying ".. and look how smooth the video is!" and he was filming his TV and I shit you not, I could see it hiccup every 2-3 seconds regularily -- the same problem that we have. Some people just don't seem to notice it.

Compound that with the WIFI + streaming problems that some others are trying to solve and it can be confusing; however at this point I am 100% sure that 100% of the RK3066 devices have a sync / other problem in the HDMI driver that causes this. I really don't think it's related to CPU speed either -- the RK3066 is more than fast enough to decode video & render simple opengl at 60fps smoothly.

I will be very curious to see if the RK3188 based TV sticks have a similar bug or if it's a non-issue; my guess is that it's an RK3066 specific problem.
