Microsd speeds testing thread!

Postby deadhp1 » Thu Jan 24, 2013 11:45 am

I'll start this off by stating that when you run an OS off a microsd card you want a card that has better random access speeds, rather than a card that can do higher sequential speeds. Usually the higher class cards sacrifice random speeds in order to gain higher sequential speeds. There are always some exceptions to the rule of course.
So a class 2 could be faster than a class 10...at least in random speeds.
Slower cards can lead to lagging performance!

For the purpose of testing I'll be using the shizuku edition of Crystal Disk Mark 3 available at:
http://crystalmark.info/software/Crysta ... dex-e.html

I tested several cards I had laying around. I have a bunch more, but these we're just the ones that are unused as of this morning.
My tests are limited to an older microsd to sdcard adapter that I use. I used the same adapter with all the tests. They've all been formatted to fat32.

The results of my tests:
As you can see the 8GB Sandisk Extreme Pro UHS-1 microsd is the clear winner. It has decent all around speeds and excels at random r/w.
The 8GB class 4 Sandisk that came in the GK802 takes second place.
The worst performing card was the 32GB class 10 Lexar. This card actually causes android to lag a bit.

Please post up the results of your tests!

yea makes sense I had the os on my Lexar class10 8gb card for the first week and noticed a lot of lag switched back to stock card and its working great now

Another part that has impact on speed is how you set up the partition

A good article aboug this:

Another good article on how to improve performance on android:

Thanks hste,
I have the tools "SD-Booster" and "SD Tools" tried.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... R0b29scyJd
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... 9vc3RlciJd
Just as we see it from the SD card faster if I with me the value of
512kb to 128kb increase.

I have now found another link:
http://www.drakaz.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=1230&p=2
that explains how you can increase the speed even without app. Perhaps this should times in the next firmware version
be installed.

I don't use windows. Is there similar tool for Ubuntu/Mint?
I can run it on wine, but it may produce false results.

I now have time to play with the apps "SD Booster" and "SD Tools"
made and tests.
Here are the results.
The orginal SD card 8Gbyte
cache 128K write ca. 5,5 MB/s
cache 128K read ca. 6,8 MB/s
cache 512K write ca. 5,5 MB/s
cache 512K read ca. 21,7 MB/s

and the ADATA Premier Pro UHS-I U 1 16 GByte
cache 128K write ca. 8,5 MB/s
cache 128K read ca. 15,5 MB/s
cache 512K write ca. 13,6 MB/s
cache 512K eead ca. 20.5 MB/s

As far as I've seen that has "SD Booster" only files
/sys/devices/virtual/bdi/179:0
and
/sys/devices/virtual/bdi/179:8
set to 512.

Sorry I meant, of course,
/sys/devices/virtual/bdi/179:0/read_ahead_kb
and
/sys/devices/virtual/bdi/179:8/read_ahead_kb
set to 512

just for those in the Toronto area that I know of might be others so check away but just picked up a couple sandisk ultra 32gb micro sd cards from COSTCO the ones with 30mb read speed and got them for a great price had to mention it here they were only 28.99 each so less then a buck a gb for uhs-1 speeds cheaper then ordering straight from china

is the sd card used as a hard drive when running ubunto?
big question is can it run with the larger sd cards 64Gb for more storage space.
and any body test any of the 64Gb cards for ReadWr speeds
