UG802 JB Preview Firmware

Postby deadhp1 » Sat Nov 03, 2012 3:52 pm

11/03/2012
We are supposed to be getting the official JB firmware for the UG802 at some point tonight/tomorrow.
I had started this project before I found that out.
I first tried to take the MK802 III system and make a system.img, but I just couldn't get it to work. None of the permission are set correctly.
I then tried using the MX1 system.img and managed to get that to work after replacing the wifi modules. That system.img is not very good specifically netflix and keyboard.

So what I have done is taken the boot.img(with kernel) and wifi modules from the MK802 III.
I then took the system.img from my rooted MK808 beta 2 release and replaced the wifi modules with those above.
So what we have is a working rooted JB update for the UG802.
I'm calling this a preview because we'll be getting the official very soon. So this is only for those that can't wait.
As a plus it seems to have very good audio sync.

WOW... this is it guys. Perfect sync finally. :D :) :D
System UI is a bit smoother/snappy. Not a hugh improvement but a little more responsive.
Videos play in perfect sync in all formats. This is what we have been waiting for.
Colors seem a bit more punchy or richer, cleaner. Not perfect but a small improvement was clearly made.
The old Rom was a bit dark and muddy.

1080p Mkv's plays but just ok. I noticed consistent frame drops... not so good.
But watchable and at least it's in sync.
Wifi connects no problem. Does not drop out/off.
The screen is NOT stretched. They got that right.
This is a hugh step in the right direction.
AND we got the right click, back button back....
Also looks like the cpu is running at 1.6 max... antutu score 6120
The best ROM to date for the UG802.

I used Rockchip_Batch_Tool_v1.5 to update to this ROM.
Not sure if SD card method works, I didn't test that method.
Thanks deadhp1 you the man! :D

OK... good news
I got the old stock browser to work with an old Flash Player.
I'm using Flash version 11.1.115.11

But all the other current web browsers did not support Flash Player with Jelly Bean 4.1.
Dolphin Browser, Chrome Browser, Firefox Browser... NADA

EDIT.... use old version Dolphin Browser HD 8.5.1 and Flash version 11.1.115.11
Works with flash and jelly bean.

Upgrade the firmware with rockchip tool.
Don't know why but the flash works automatically in the stock browser. Wifi is ok.
Default video out is only HD ready 720 not Full HD. Can choose full HD option but it seems just the zoom option not native 1080.

Stock UG802 firmware doesn't have a real 1080p output either, it's stil 720p when set at 1080p.

I couldn't download the firmware any more. If you can please mirror it on sites such as Google Drive, MediaFire (no waiting with resume support), ZippyShare (no waiting without resume support) or maybe RapidShare. Thanks a bunch :D

I loaded your file to a free file host since you lost your file hosting.
Hope you don't mind. If you do, just pull the link or this post.
If you want to use the link at the beginning of your post, fine by me.

Here is the zip file hosted on a russian host site. Fast download.

DOWN LOAD LINK ug802_JB_preview_update.zip

Unzip file and flash with Rockchip Batch Tool.
Use Rockchip_Batch_Tool_v1.5 to Flash this ROM.

SD card easy update.img was not tested by me for this ROM.
So I can't confirm that method will work.

Ask deadhp1 if this update.img file supports the easy update SD card method.

As my UG802's power/usb has snapped off, I think the SDcard update method is the only one available to me..
Am I correct that I wont be able to flash the new kernel with everything else via SD..
... and could anyone take a real close picture of were the traces go, so I might be able to do a quick repair?

Thankx

This is very good JB firmware! I flashed it with batch tool and everything went good. All A/V sync issues gone, my custom streaming apps work etc! It's a keeper! Thank you, deadhp1! :D

I tried this JB Preview Firmware to my UG802 and I was surprised! It's far from the original firmware had my UG802.
Congratulations deadhp1! you have done a great job!

The only small problem is the 720p and 1080p mkv files playback. Drops some frames all the time during the movie playback.
I tested playing a few mkv files from external SD, from my network NAS via WiFi (54Mbps) and from a USB to Ethernet adapter.
In all cases the frame drop is visible. I dont know if this is because of the speed limit by kernel to 1.2 GHz instead of the maximum 1.6 GHz that could go the UG802.
I couldn't overclock the CPU to 1.6 GHz. The speed as I said before is limited by the kernel to 1.2 GHz.

It is possible to change only the kernel and unlock the speed limit so I can get my UG802 CPU to 1.6 GHz ?

I was having a few issues with the 1.6 finless rom which initially worked great, I'm going to give this one a go now.
Thank you for your hard work

PS: this might be a silly question, can I still use the guide from the thread "Flashing the Firmware" for this one? I'll be updating from finless 1.6 JB

Finally got to flash this rom. You do notice the performance of JB. Here are my findings:
Good:
- performance when swiping between home screens much better
- english dictionary is fixed. Before, almost all words had red underline
- i like the volume controls on status bar
- no crappy default launcher
- wifi bars at 3/4 seems better

Not so good:
- audio and video sync issue remains. Here is a video stream example
http://www.dw.de/%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A8%D8% ... B1/s-30738

- too much screen flicker when there is a dialog box eg. Clicking a drop-down menu on a websie brings the selection box on screen, but too much flicker. Same flicker playing angry birds

Keep up the great work, looking forward for the next rom

I have a several UG802's. I've noticed that 2 of them produce a screen flicker and artifacting. These also produce the same thing on the ICS roms.
I can't make my other 3 UG802's do this. I thinks it's a build quality issue.
As for the audio/video sync I find it nearly perfect for mkv's and other videos.
I haven't gotten a chance to test internet streaming, but mine were streamed over local network.

I'll give that video a shot a bit later.

I confirm. Restarting the device solved the A/V sync. Could it be a process eating up memory?

or maybe the device heats up more than it can handle and something not work right ?
